Virus Testing in Racing Pigeons¶
Viruses are a major pathogen group in racing pigeon disease. This page collects testing and control knowledge for 7 common pigeon viruses; every pathogen page covers transmission, signs, differential diagnosis and prevention points.
Pathogen Overview¶
| Pathogen | English | Test method |
|---|---|---|
| Pigeon poxvirus | Pigeon Poxvirus | Real-time PCR (qPCR) |
| Pigeon polyomavirus | Pigeon Polyomavirus (PiAPV) | Probe-based real-time PCR (qPCR) |
| Pigeon rotavirus | Pigeon Rotavirus | Real-time RT-PCR |
| Pigeon herpesvirus | Pigeon Herpesvirus (PHV) | Real-time PCR (qPCR) |
| Pigeon adenovirus | Pigeon Adenovirus | Real-time PCR (qPCR) |
| Pigeon circovirus | Pigeon Circovirus (PiCV) | Real-time PCR (qPCR) |
| Newcastle disease virus | Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) | Real-time RT-PCR |
Common Features of Viral Disease¶
- Overlapping signs: respiratory, digestive and neurological signs look very similar across several viral diseases, so signs alone cannot confirm a diagnosis;
- Set off by stress: race marking, transport and moulting are the stress events that often trigger viral disease;
- Immune-related: immunosuppression caused by circovirus and similar agents opens the door to other pathogens;
- Confirm by testing: real-time PCR/RT-PCR is the main route to confirmation.
Control Principles¶
- Vaccination (Newcastle disease and others) and antibody monitoring;
- Biosecurity: isolation, disinfection, density control, less stress;
- Quarantine on introduction and regular monitoring, to block transmission by silent carriers.
