How to use this section
- Similar signs, different causes: respiratory and digestive signs overlap heavily between pathogen groups, so test before you medicate;
- Differential diagnosis is key: oral white plaques may be trichomonads, Candida or the mucosal form of pigeon pox, and the treatment for each is completely different;
- Watch for zoonoses: Salmonella and Chlamydia psittaci can infect people, so always wash and disinfect your hands after handling sick pigeons.
Scientific statement: signs alone cannot confirm a diagnosis; laboratory testing (qPCR and similar) is the basis for confirmation. The content on this site is an educational reference and does not constitute veterinary diagnostic advice.
